The Food Pantry at Trenton Methodist Church has been in operation since November 2017. It began as a partner of the Food Bank of Central and Eastern North Carolina New Bern branch utilizing memorial funds that had been given to the church. In the beginning the pantry was only open 2 Saturday mornings a month providing boxes to families based on the size of the family.
In September 2018, when Jones County was devastated by Hurricane Florence and the church was flooded, the pantry volunteers felt that it was very important to have the pantry available every week. During the months following the flood, the pantry worked out of a storage pod in the church parking lot until the church building was clean enough to use. We adopted a “client choice” model and moved our “shopping” table set up several times to accommodate construction in the church but were open for distribution almost every Saturday.
In February 2020, several volunteers attended training from FBCENC to become a healthy pantry. We were designated a Gold Level Healthy Pantry at that time. At the beginning of the Covid Pandemic, we looked for ways to continue serving our community. By moving our carts onto the church porch and following guidelines for masking and social distancing, we were able to not only continue to serve the community but to continue offering client choice instead of prepacked boxes.
We have since moved back into the building and continue to be open every Saturday morning from 9:30am until 11:30am. Shoppers enter through the Fellowship Hall, are registered, and then are able to choose foods from a selection of canned goods, dry goods, and fresh produce. In addition, we also offer an assortment of breads and sweets through our partnership with RCS of New Bern. We welcome anyone that lives in Jones County.
